From Ethiopia’s highlands to your comfy kitchen, we’re going back in time. We’ll traverse centuries, navigate stormy seas, and wander through bustling coffeehouses. This is the story of our beloved coffee. A story to alter your perception of your daily cup. Shall we embark on an adventure?

The Ancient Origins of Coffee: Discovering a Beloved Beverage

Our journey begins in a rather unexpected place: with a goat! Yes, a goat. As the folklore goes, in Ethiopia during the 9th century, a goat herder named Kaldi came across an astounding revelation. The goats became lively and energetic after nibbling on red berries.

These ‘magic’ berries intrigued Kaldi, and he couldn’t resist trying them. Lo-and-behold! The world’s first coffee break was born.

But how did these ancient Ethiopians enjoy their newfound delicacy? Not as a latte or a mocha, that’s for sure. Instead, they mashed coffee cherries with animal fat to create energy balls. A far cry from today’s coffee culture, but a much-needed energy boost for Ethiopian warriors before battle.

Word of the ‘miracle berries’ spread, making coffee a key part of Ethiopian culture. The beverage gained such high esteem among Ethiopians that they developed a dedicated ceremony for brewing and drinking it. A moment to connect, share stories, and enjoy.

The rich flavors of coffee together. Even today, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a treasured tradition, uniting people over a shared cup of coffee.

So, next time you’re savoring your morning coffee, remember—you’re sipping on a drink with a rich, centuries-old heritage. Now that’s what I call a morning pick-me-up!

While the story of Kaldi is likely more legend than fact, it’s a fun way to illustrate the origins of coffee. We know for sure that coffee comes from Ethiopia.

From Ethiopia to Yemen: The Journey of Coffee

Did you know that the term ‘Mocha,’ often associated with chocolate-flavored coffee today, actually originated from a port city in Yemen? We’ll now uncover how coffee made its way from the Ethiopian plateau to the dry Yemeni landscapes.

Around the 15th century, the seeds of the magical coffee plant started crossing borders. Coffee’s reputation as a ‘wine of Araby’ began here, on the trading routes between Ethiopia and Yemen. Yemeni traders and Sufi monks discovered coffee’s unique qualities and started growing it on a large scale.

The Yemeni mountains were a challenging place to live, with unrelenting sun and soil that refused to yield. Yet, the resilient coffee plants thrived, producing beans with a distinctive flavor that was loved far and wide. Mocha became a bustling hub thanks to the coffee trade, forever cementing its name in the coffee world. The term “mocha” became synonymous with coffee, a legacy that lasts to this day.

The Yemenis guarded their precious coffee trees fiercely. They hoarded coffee beans, boiling and roasting them to prevent other nations from growing it. Our next chapter will highlight how coffee’s influence extended beyond its original borders, intriguing individuals from diverse continents.

Coffee was so prized in Yemen that they forbid to export fertile beans out of the country! Yemen monopolized the coffee trade for a while because of this law.
